Meerkats / Lightning - 2016

MEERKATS / LIGHTNING DRAMA SCENE - FANTASY ART-PANEL(S)....

We began to create our own Meerkat (- Suricata suricatta) fantasy art-panels, actually back early in 2007 !   Here, on this page we are showing a small selection of them....

The larger-sized painting ( oil-on-canvas) shown here (- Right) was originally created back in February, 2016.    As intended, it was then in February -March and again in August -September 2016 ( along with some other pieces of art that we created), exhibited publicly in a local art-exhibiting building / complex - with gallery space.

It features a total of 16 little meerkats !   Although, this painting shows some "photo-realism", it is to be considered also a "fantasy image".    That is because, in the absolutely huge 'Kalahari Desert' of Southern Africa where meerkats live in the wild, whenever there are torrentially heavy rain downpours / thunderstorms - in reality, by the time when the heavy rain starts falling and there are flashes of lightning, the meerkat "mob" will have already run for cover well down in their burrows !!

In nature, Meerkats - Suricata suricatta - are only very small mammals, measuring only about 30 centimeters (- approximately 12 inches) tall when fully-grown / adult.   They are one of a number of members of the 'Mongoose' family - Herpestidae.  They are also called 'suricates' - and interestingly, the name meerkat is also sometimes spelled as "mierkat".     Their survival in such a challenging environment is usually dependent on the fact that they live so closely together in groups.

       They weigh - on average - only 730g (- males ) and 720g (- females ).

The mongoose family Herpestidae - containing the "true" mongooses, including meerkats, is according to research only a relatively small family of just 34 recognized species.    Even though they have been introduced all over the world, they are actually native to only both Africa and Asia.

At the time of exhibiting this painting twice during in 2016, we were told that it attracted quite a lot of positive comments - including on the building's social-media platform(s) - for which, we will be forever thankful / and grateful.

This is a moving and emotional illustrated story about two best friends who go hiking together, and - without even realizing it - have been struck by lightning !    They both awake to find themselves together near the mouth of a cave where they were both struck during an approaching thunderstorm - with what appears to be a large "ball" of light in front of them, which is in fact, actually a "portal".   Little do they both know, they have actually been killed by the lightning - and are now in a spirit state - nobody, including their loved ones, can physically see or hear them anymore.
